This and many other myths are actually just that: misconceptions. In most cases, very real problems are to blame, such as your infant having a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.midlandkidsdentist.com\/lip-and-tongue-tie-treatment.html\">lip- or tongue-tie<\/a>. Learn the difference between the truth and misinformation so you and your baby can have a more positive mealtime experience!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#1. Pain or Bleeding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, you might experience some <em>mild <\/em>discomfort the first day or two your infant starts breastfeeding. But think about it this way: they don\u2019t even have fully grown teeth at this point. It shouldn\u2019t be outright painful for your little one to nurse! If it is, it\u2019s possible they\u2019re having to work harder because a lip- or tongue-tie is restricting their oral movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2. Lazy Feeding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no such thing as a \u201clazy\u201d baby. Babies need to eat. Period. For them, breastfeeding isn\u2019t a chore, it\u2019s a necessity, and one they can get very loud about! An infant that \u201cfalls asleep at the wheel\u201d isn\u2019t choosing to do so. It\u2019s much more likely that a lip- or tongue-tie is causing them to have to spend <em>more energy <\/em>in order to get the same amount of nutrients as a baby without one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#3. \u201cNot Making Enough Milk\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This can be a legitimate problem for a number of reasons \u2013 the key point being that <em>there is a reason<\/em>. To not investigate the issue further would be a huge medical oversight on the part of the doctor or dentist. In the case of a lip- or tongue-tie, for example, what happens is that the breast isn\u2019t being stimulated enough to produce more milk. Because the infant doesn\u2019t have a full range of oral motion, they suck on the end of the nipple and cannot reach the breast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#4. Size<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This one\u2019s a little ironic. Claims that a baby\u2019s tongue or mouth is \u201ctoo small\u201d or that a parent\u2019s breast is \u201ctoo big\u201d are not backed up by science (or common sense). Babies with and without a lip- or tongue-tie have small tongues compared to their parent\u2019s breast. The true difference is that one is able to elevate their tongue to effectively latch and stimulate milk production. The other can\u2019t do this because of the excess tissue holding their tongue down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When breastfeeding is difficult, it\u2019s almost never due to some sort of \u201cinadequacy\u201d or \u201csensitivity.\u201d Both parent and child are experiencing a very real issue that, in most cases, can be addressed.
