While you were raising your loved one, you might’ve had your own challenges getting them to take care of their smile. Now that they are a teen, they are better at their oral hygiene, but it may be easy for these good habits to fall through the cracks. After all, they likely have busy lives with issues of their own. A great way to keep their growing grin strong is with these six tips.
1.) Emphasize Brushing and Flossing
Teens often have to navigate multiple things at once, such as their academic and social lives. Certain tasks can get pushed to the forefront while others may get left behind. Unfortunately, brushing and flossing may be some that don’t get seen with as much importance. Talk with them and let them know how a few minutes taking care of their teeth can help them have one less thing to worry about.
2.) Be Mindful of Their Diet
Your teen might love to snack on sugary foods and beverages or have energy drinks, but you should try your best to help them limit these. While on occasion these items aren’t bad, overindulging can lead to cavities and gum problems that will take more time out of their already busy schedule. Consider having healthy options lying around, like fruits and vegetables, so they can keep their oral and overall health in great shape.
3.) Keep An Eye Out for Their Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth start to erupt in the late teens and early 20s, but these can be a problem for many people. They can be impacted or erupt at an angle, causing discomfort or even misalignment in some cases! By letting their dentist take a look, they will be able to avoid any problems with these third molars.
4.) Educate About the Effects of Vaping and Tobacco
Many people used their teen years to experiment with things like vapes and tobacco. While hearing your loved one is doing the same might be frustrating, you should stay calm and let them know how it can impact their oral health. Take the time to educate them on how these habits put them at a higher risk of gum disease, cavities, and even oral cancer.
5.) Get Them a Mouthguard
If your teen plays sports, then it’s important you get them a mouthguard. This is an oral appliance that sits over their smile and absorbs blows to their face. The pressure will be distributed across it and prevent chips, cracks, and damage.
6.) Schedule Consistent Visits with Their Dentist
No matter how old you are, having regular checkups is a crucial part of making sure your grin is healthy. The same goes for your teen! Although it might be hard to get them on board with their busy schedules, these visits can help them avoid bigger headaches later on. That way, their oral health stays in great shape and their smile stays happy.
