Mouth Milestones: What Happens at Baby’s First Dental Visit?

Your baby’s first year of life is full of exciting firsts. Whether they’ve begun walking, can say a word or two, or have recently debuted their first tooth, these milestones occur at record speed. But what happens once their adorable grin begins to develop? How long should you wait before taking them to their first oral health checkup and cleaning ? Here’s a closer look at when your baby should make their big debut at a pediatric dentist near you- and what you can expect to happen when they do!

Dental Debut: What Happens During an Infant Dental Checkup?

Your baby’s first dental checkup should occur at around age one, or as soon as their first tooth erupts. While it may seem premature to bring them in if they only have one, several, or no teeth, it is extremely important to establish a relationship with their pediatric oral health team as soon as possible. This will not only help their smile by regularly monitoring its development, but it will also help your tot get more comfortable having their teeth and gums cleaned and examined.

Their first visit should only last about 45 minutes. During that time, you and your little one will meet the dentist and dental team, have their gums and any teeth examined, and have their mouth gently cleaned by a caring and gentle hygienist.  While they likely won’t need X-rays yet, their dentist may request some if there is significant decay or other oral health issues present. Then, if everything else looks good, you’ll be scheduled to return in six months, and you and your baby will be free to go!

At-Home Oral Hygiene Tips for Your Baby’s Growing Smile

While regular checkups and cleanings are essential for keeping your child’s smile healthy and strong, it is important that you do your part at home by practicing excellent oral hygiene with them. Be sure to brush your baby’s teeth twice a day, and floss between any teeth that touch daily. If they still don’t have any, you can keep their mouth clean by wiping it out with a damp cloth and infant’s toothpaste after each meal or bottle until they do. This will help reduce oral bacteria and train your little one to stay comfortable while you care for their smile.

Remember, although it may seem silly to visit the dentist if your baby only has just a few or no teeth, it is important to begin their oral hygiene routine as early as possible. This way, they will always understand the importance of excellent oral health and have the building blocks for a lifetime of smiles as they grow!
