3 Ways to Utilize Your Child’s Dental Insurance to Benefit Their Smile

Having dental insurance is one thing. Utilizing it to the fullest is something else entirely. Luckily, maximizing your child’s benefits is nowhere near as complicated as many parents think it is. In fact, you can use their coverage in a way that helps your child’s smile (and your wallet!) with these three tips.

Tip #1: Schedule Their Second Checkup and Cleaning of 2022

Prevention is key in the world of dentistry. For this reason, most dental plans include two checkups and cleanings annually, as well as important diagnostic measures like X-rays. Unfortunately, if your child skips one of these appointments, they won’t get a “bonus” one the following year. So, if they haven’t already, make sure they visit their dentist for their second checkup and cleaning before 2022 comes to a close.

Tip #2: Don’t Forget About Additional Preventive Care

Biannual checkups and cleanings are certainly important, but they aren’t the only measure that your dentist will take to help your child prevent cavities. Fluoride varnishes and dental sealants are two additional treatments that have been proven to reduce their chances of developing tooth decay! The good news is that many children’s dental insurance plans cover up to 80% of the cost. Not to mention that these decay-preventing solutions also have the potential to save you hundreds or thousands on fillings, dental crowns, root canals, and the like.

Tip #3: Check Their Annual Maximum

Annual maximums are the highest dollar amount your provider will contribute to your child’s dental care within a certain timeframe. Of course, any unused dollars won’t carry over into the next year, which is why it’s important to see if there are additional treatments your child needs, like a filling to restore a decayed tooth or orthodontic treatment to address an uneven bite or misaligned teeth.

Remember, Their Benefits May Reset on January 1st!

Many parents forget that their child’s benefits reset on January 1st. As a result, there are only a few weeks left to maximize their coverage! If you don’t, you could wind up leaving hundreds of your valuable dollars on the table. So, there is no time like the present to re-familiarize yourself with their benefits. If you have any trouble, don’t hesitate to reach out to their provider directly. Otherwise, you can talk to your child’s pediatric dental team to see if they can help.
